Bellapais Abbey is the imposing ruin of a monastery in the Pentadaktylos range, once home to Augustinian monks. Gothic architecture and a breathtaking view of Kyrenia and the Mediterranean.
In the heart of the Pentadaktylos range in the north of Cyprus lies a treasure that will captivate every traveller: Bellapais Abbey. The imposing ruin of a monastery, once home to Augustinian monks, is today a fascinating example of Gothic architecture.
One of its main attractions is the panoramic view of the north coast. From the monastery terrace there is a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean, the town of Kyrenia and the Pentadaktylos range. On a clear day you can even see the coast of Turkey.

Bellapais Abbey was founded in 1197 by the French nobleman Aimery de Lusignan. It originally served as the seat of the Bishop of Kyrenia, but in 1270 King Hugh III gave it to the Augustinian order. Under their leadership the monastery grew and became an important centre of religious and cultural life in Cyprus.
Despite its dilapidated state, the abbey is still a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The main church boasts a vaulted nave and richly decorated portals. The monastery complex also includes the refectory, the cloister and dormitories, which bear witness to the modest life of the monks.
The cloister with its cypress trees and the view from the terrace are among the most photogenic spots in the north.
Bellapais Abbey is a unique gem that no traveller in the north of Cyprus should miss:
