A HISTORY GOING BACK TO THE 12TH CENTURY

History and architecture

Bellapais Abbey was founded in 1197 by the French nobleman Aimery de Lusignan. It originally served as the seat of the Bishop of Kyrenia, but in 1270 King Hugh III gave it to the Augustinian order. Under their leadership the monastery grew and became an important centre of religious and cultural life in Cyprus.

Despite its dilapidated state, the abbey is still a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The main church boasts a vaulted nave and richly decorated portals. The monastery complex also includes the refectory, the cloister and dormitories, which bear witness to the modest life of the monks.
