Lake Maries lies in a valley surrounded by forests and mountains, with small waterfalls, lagoons and peace far from the beaches. How to get to the lake and what to bring.
Thassos is known for its beautiful beaches, azure sea and rich history. But besides these iconic attractions, it also hides a lesser-known but all the more fascinating natural gem – Lake Maries. This freshwater lake surrounded by lush vegetation and mountains is an ideal destination for those looking for peace, natural beauty and a little adventure.
The lake is hidden among dense forests, which give it peace and a sense of seclusion. Its surface reflects the surrounding hills and the sky, creating a postcard scene. In spring and summer the meadows bloom, the birds sing and nature is truly alive.
Tarmac to the village of Maries, then about 3 km along an unpaved valley
Not in the lake; yes in the lagoons by the waterfalls
None – in the season only a honey stall
Lake Maries lies in the southern part of the island, near the village of Maries, after which it is named. Although it is not right by the sea, its location in a valley surrounded by mountains creates a unique atmosphere – and the journey there is an experience in itself.
First you get to the inland village of Maries, which is reached by an ordinary tarmac road. You turn off the main coastal circuit – either from the small coastal village of Skala Maries (Skala Marion) or from the town of Limenaria. From the village of Maries, an unpaved off-road track leads to the lake.
Only vehicles with an off-road permit may use the track from the village of Maries to the lake. An ordinary hire car is not allowed there – you risk a fine and losing your insurance.
Leave the car in the village, where the tarmac road ends, and walk to the lake – about 3 km along a dusty valley.
Probably the most beautiful scenery around the lake is offered by the small waterfalls with lagoons, where you can even take a dip in the refreshing water. You get to them along the lake on narrow forest paths and over the dried-up shore – they are not far from the lake at all.
The area around the lake invites you to go hiking and on relaxed walks, and photographers will find paradise here – morning mists, mountains mirrored on the surface or sunsets look magical.
The lake itself is not suitable for swimming, and swimming in it is not allowed. You can cool off in the lagoons by the waterfalls – comfortable, sturdy shoes are handy for getting there.
For the whole circuit you need an off-road vehicle with an off-road permit. If you do not want to drive off-road, you can take an optional excursion with a tour operator.
There is nowhere to eat or drink at Lake Maries, but in the main tourist season there is a small stall where you can buy excellent home-made honey or propolis ointments.
When you plan your next trip to Thassos, do not forget to include Lake Maries in your itinerary. It is a hidden treasure well worth discovering.
Water, something for a snack and sturdy shoes – the way to the lake and to the waterfalls follows dusty, stony paths.
Trips I recommend as a tour rep. Local agencies list them on GetYourGuide mainly in season. On jeep trips, depending on the group, you may also get to drive yourself.
The best base is Limenaria or the fishing village of Skala Maries on the south coast – from there the road leads inland to the lake and the waterfalls. In Limenaria I like The Dome Luxury.
