Theologos and the Kefalogourna waterfall offer an ideal combination of nature, history and traditional Greek hospitality. Definitely worth a visit for anyone who wants to see Thassos from a different perspective.
When people hear “the island of Thassos”, most travellers picture golden beaches, crystal-clear sea and sleepy harbour villages. Few people realise, though, that the historic town of Theologos and the enchanting Kefalogourna waterfall are hidden in the middle of the interior.
Theologos is the island’s former administrative centre and boasts a rich history and traditional architecture – typical stone houses with slate roofs. You get here from the south of the island by the road from the junction in the resort of Potos, where there are clear signs pointing inland. The drive takes only a few minutes and rewards you with wonderful views of the countryside.
From Potos, just a few minutes by car
A short walk from the village centre
Spit-roasted lamb in the local tavernas
A walk through the narrow lanes takes you to small churches, chapels and traditional tavernas:
The churches of Agios Dimitrios and Agia Paraskevi – and small chapels with Byzantine paintings.
A stone arched bridge – just outside the village, built in the traditional Epirot style.
The ethnographic museum – it shows the life and customs of the island in past centuries.
Spit-roasted lamb – a speciality of the local tavernas that you should not miss.
The taverna with a water mill – just outside the town, with a traditional atmosphere.
Stone houses – with the slate roofs the village is known for.
A short walk leads from the village centre to the waterfall. The path starts near the main street and passes old olive trees, fragrant herbs and a babbling stream. After a few minutes’ walk you will hear the gentle sound of water, which leads you straight to your goal – the Kefalogourna waterfall. On this sun-drenched island, its refreshment feels like a small miracle.
The waterfall has the most water in spring and early summer, when the snow melts in the mountains and the springs are full. In the summer months the flow weakens, but the magical atmosphere of the place remains. The water is ice-cold all year round, so swimming is only for the hardy – but even without a swim, this place will recharge your batteries for the whole day.
Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sun creates a play of shadows and reflections on the water. The greenery and moss-covered stones look romantic even at midday.
Try a longer exposure – in your photos the water turns into a soft, milky curtain, like something out of a fairy tale.
The best place to set off for Theologos is Potos. There I like the older but quiet and pleasant family-run Hotel Thassos. A higher standard is offered by Alexandra Beach and Alexandra Elegance, and right on San Antonio beach is the Atrium hotel with good facilities.
