Kastro, the mountain ghost village

Kastro is a forgotten mountain village on the island of Thassos, where a single year-round resident lives with his dog and small tavernas come to life in summer. It offers peace, clean mountain air, a historic church and an authentic atmosphere away from the main tourist routes.

A GHOST VILLAGE

Kastro – a ghost village on Thassos with a magical atmosphere

Kastro is a small, mostly abandoned mountain village on the island of Thassos. It lies high in the mountains above the resort of Limenaria, where people were once safer from pirates. It offers peace, beautiful views and an interesting glimpse into island life in the past. The village still has its original layout and a number of traditional stone buildings – some well preserved, others already in ruins.

Today Kastro has a single permanent resident who lives here all year round – with his dog and a small shop where tourists can buy drinks or small souvenirs.

In the summer season the village at least partly comes to life – several small family tavernas open here. In the taverna on the square, entertainment is often provided by Mr Kostas, who shows visitors his tricks and magic. Another little taverna is right at the edge of the village as you arrive. Do not expect a big menu – the tavernas offer simple traditional food and cold drinks, which are very welcome after the drive into the mountains.

THE VILLAGE'S HISTORY

The magical church of Agios Athanasios and the secret of the key

One of the most interesting places in the village is undoubtedly the church of Agios Athanasios, which stands right by the square. It was built in the 15th century, and although it is no longer regularly used for services, it still breathes history and a sacred atmosphere. This stone church is worth visiting not only for its silence and inner strength but also for the beautiful icons inside.

Tip

If you want to look inside, you can borrow the key to the church at the taverna.

CLEAN MOUNTAIN AIR

Kastro as a natural health retreat

Since ancient times people have come to Kastro not only for peace and quiet but also for the clean mountain air, which is good for health. Thanks to its location high in the mountains, the air here is free of pollution and rich in oxygen, which traditionally helped people with respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis or chronic airway diseases.

Many also came here for relief from allergies or as part of their recovery after an illness. In the past Kastro was seen as a place where you could “clear your lungs” and gain new strength thanks to the natural environment.

Today there are no longer any sanatoriums, but visitors still enjoy walks in the fresh air and the calm atmosphere of the mountain village.

GETTING THERE

How do you get to Kastro?

The easiest way

From Limenaria

From the main road in Limenaria a signposted turning leads inland. A tarmac road full of hairpin bends takes you right to the entrance to the village. Kastro can be reached by an ordinary car – no 4×4 is needed, but drive carefully: the road is narrow and winding.

The most beautiful way

Over the mountains from the Ipsarion area

An alternative is the mountain route from the eastern part of the island – for example from Panagia or the area around Ipsarion. It includes unpaved stretches, which only vehicles with an off-road permit may use – a 4×4 from a hire company that expressly allows driving on dirt roads. An ordinary hire car is not allowed here – you risk a fine and losing your insurance. The route is for more adventurous travellers and offers beautiful views of the island’s interior.

Parking

Either way, you can park at the edge of the village, from where everything is within walking distance.

DAY TRIP TIP

A half-day to full-day trip

A lovely trip is to combine a visit to Kastro with a drive up Ipsarion and a stop at Lake Maries. For this you need a 4×4 vehicle that is permitted to drive on off-road tracks.

01
First stop

Take the turning from Limenaria or Skala Maries to the village of Maries, and then continue along the off-road track to Lake Maries. Have a look at the lake and the waterfalls.

02
Second stop

From the lake, continue on to Ipsarion. You can drive almost to just below the summit, and from there it is only a short climb to the top.

03
Third stop

Kastro

From Ipsarion, continue through beautiful countryside along off-road tracks to Kastro. Then return by the quickest route – the tarmac road back down to Limenaria.

What to bring

A snack, plenty to drink, sturdy shoes, warmer clothes out of season, and sunglasses and sun cream in the season.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Kastro is not a destination for everyone. It is best planned as a half-day trip – ideally in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the light in the mountains is at its most beautiful.
